Historic park commemorating the 1894 discovery of the first commercial oil well in Texas west of the Mississippi River. Features authentic oil field equipment, a historic oil derrick, 1951 Cooper Double Drum Pulling Unit, 1923 wooden jail, and historical markers. History On June 9, 1894, workers drilling a water well for the city of Corsicana struck oil at 1,030 feet. This accidental discovery led to the first commercial oil field in Texas west of the Mississippi and transformed Corsicana into a boomtown. The discovery predates Spindletop by 7 years and marks the beginning of Texas's oil industry.
